Applicants/Recruiting: Joining the NYU Journal of Law and Business

The Journal of Law & Business is one of NYU Law’s newest and most innovative academic journals. We invite you to take part in this exciting new enterprise.

This journal was founded to give our members opportunities above and beyond those available at other journals. Our practical approach to legal writing and greater contact with practicing attorneys provide unique ways to prepare for leadership roles during and after law school.

Vision Statement

The Journal of Law and Business provides a forum for dialogue and thorough analysis of issues, ideas, problems, and solutions relating to law and business, and contributes to academic scholarship regarding the interaction of the two professions.

The Journal focuses on recent developments and innovative successes in the law and business community. We are committed to publishing authoritative writings on the interrelationship between the two fields. The Journal explores a number of general areas, including: international law and business; law and finance; and the effect of law and business on public interest organizations. The Journal also addresses contemporary topics in law and business, including: corporate governance; mergers and acquisitions; venture capital and private equity; bankruptcy and restructuring; capital markets; and securities.

Practitioner Pieces

In addition to publishing traditional academic pieces, the Journal is devoted to publishing high-quality essays and shorter articles by legal practitioners. These practitioner pieces have received rave reviews, and are a benchmark of our success.

Professional Advisory Board

Our Journal has extensive contacts in the greater law and business community, and we interact frequently with several attorneys and firms that are committed to the future of the Journal and serve as active members on our Professional Advisory Board. The members of the Board include general counsels of several corporations, partners at major law firms, and government officials. This Board helps us develop ideas, network with other practicing lawyers, and learn from some of the profession’s greatest minds through seminars and luncheons.

Events and Opportunities to be Published

Journal members organize and attend special events designed to educate students about the different opportunities in law and business. Our Projects Committee organizes lunches and networking receptions for Staff Editors to learn about various practical issues. Past events include “How to Draft a Securities Purchase Agreement”, “Current Developments in Preventing Corporate Crime,” and an informational session on careers within a corporate law firm.

Staff Editors also get a unique opportunity to gain practical writing experience by contributing to Survey pieces and working with New York attorneys to jointly produce publishable articles, and writing student notes that will be published in the Journal on various topics, including hostile takeover bids in Japan and the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act.

Selection Criteria

In selecting Staff Editors, the Journal will focus largely on each applicant’s personal statement, resume and journal preference. Only students who rank the Journal of Law and Business as their first or second preference will be considered. Significant weight will also be given to the quality of the Blue-booking and essay submitted for the writing competition.

Our Commitment to Diversity

The JLB is strongly committed to selecting a diverse group of Staff Editors. We recognize that the quality of the journal depends upon the breadth of ideas that diversity brings. JLB will strive to provide an atmosphere that is comfortable to all its members and will maintain an open line of communication between staff editors and board members to facilitate constant improvement.
